About the Artist
The accompanying photos illustrate important professional stages in my life. I began painting as a teenager in Cleveland, Ohio, as shown in the photo of me painting in the Flats of Cleveland’s industrial area ca. 1963. I have always enjoyed working en plein air as well as in the studio. Other photos mark my professional life since the 1960s. My tenure at Ball State University, where I was a professor of art history for forty years, is also illustrated in the photos. The most recent photo, 2016, shows me coming full circle by working outdoors at Eastern Market in Washington, D.C. Painting markets has been an on-going interest since my MFA days at the Art Academy of Cincinnati where I painted Findlay Market and my love of the outdoor market started. Most recently, I have been painting the environs of Eastern Market in the Washington, D.C. area. The market, for me, is reminiscent of a pre-industrial era when the interaction between producer and consumer was more direct. The growing popularity of outdoor markets seems to suggest a need for this type of interaction. Thank you for allowing me to share my art with you.
